Out of this World! Portsmouth Comic Con 2023 was brilliant. It just keeps getting better and better! We visited Portsmouth Guildhall in June and enjoyed hanging out in the sunshine with lots of comic and movie fans.
I had fun browsing stands full of original artwork, comics and fandom merch! 😂 Obviously I couldn’t resist all the toys on offer and came away with loads of bargains.
Once inside the event there were lots of free activities to do and my highlight was the Star Wars Experience created by Joker Squad UK. It transported me to Tatooine and the walk-through included film accurate props like a Pod Racer and Han in Carbonite. I loved meeting my favourite Star Wars characters especially when they paraded around raising money for charity.
On the Comic Con Main Stage I joined in with the Jedha Junior Class to learn the way of the force with Jedha FIT and I even mastered a Star Wars TikTok dance!
People watching is amazing at Portsmouth Comic Con and I was mesmerised at the amount of talented cosplayers in the parade and chilling around the site. A special shout out to the young Star Lord who won the Under 12s competition – you were brilliant!
Away from deep space, I was also transported to the new Jurassic Experience at Portsmouth Comic Con. I came face to face with Zoom the T-Rex and his rider. I had lots of pictures with the Jurassic Park Jeep and loved the ‘How to Train Your Dinosaur’ show.
I even helped identify some roarsome fossils and replica dino skeletons displayed by Dinosaur Isle, an interactive geological museum based on the Isle of Wight. Afterwards I decorated my own dinosaur egg to take home, thanks to ‘the Lawn of the Dead’ in their crafting area. Check out my video below to see more!
There was an awesome Doctor Who Exhibition where I entered the Tardis to discover exact life-size replicas of Doctor Who monsters, costume and props!
I heard the roar of the replica 1989 Batmobile and rushed outside as it was parked up in front of the Guildhall and it made a great photo op. Towering over it was a giant inflatable HULK too.
Inside the Guildhall a cinema played Star Wars, Back to the Future & Jurassic Park. There was also a Retro gaming area with GameOver where we played Space Invaders and Pacman.
Serious board gamers in the midst of campaigns, played in their own dedicated area sponsored by Dice Portsmouth. While people browsed the numerous stands.
The street food vendors on site cooked up a storm and we indulged in Katsu Curry, mocktails and duck wraps! There was a great selection of Vegan delights and treats too!
Phew, and that’s not including the fabulous guest speakers, illustrators and artisans from the Comic and Film & TV world that were at Portsmouth Comic Con. As a kid I loved it! My folks also enjoyed taking me.
It truly is an all inclusive event where fans can be themselves and share their passion for comics and films with others. It was such a safe space and everyone was friendly.
The amount of creative and talented comic book artists and esty creators is the best at any comic con we’ve recently been too and we’re so lucky to have this event on our doorstep!
It was a great family day out and we can’t wait to visit again. Everyone was so happy and it was lovely to chill in the shade on a beanbag, slipping a delicious slushy, soaking in the Comic Con atmosphere!
Tickets are available for 2024 already and we can see why Saturday sold out while we were there!
