The wonderful Wizard of Oz.

We’re not in Southampton anymore! I was transported (via tornado) to Oz and watched this marvellous musical in all it’s technicolour glory! @mayflower_theatre

The Wizard of Oz is based on the story that we all know, largely following L Frank Baum’s classic tale.

Misunderstood Dorothy (Aviva Tulley) dreams of being far away from her home in Kansas after a confrontation with her dog-hating neighbour and family.

When a tornado hits she’s is transported to the magical land of Oz with her dog Toto. After mistakenly killing The Witch of the East and acquiring her ruby slippers, Dorothy meets an eclectic bunch of misfits who join her on her adventure to meet the wonderful Wizard of Oz (Alex Bourne) and find her way home.

The Scarecrow (Benjamin Yates) did a fantastic job making us laugh and was a great performer. He was my favourite of the night.

The Tinman (Marley Fenton) had great characterisation and his body popping was brilliant.

The Cowardly Lion (Nic Greenshields) had great comic timing and I loved his acting. The whole trio had outstanding physicality and personality.

The Wicked Witch of the West (The Vivienne) stole the show with such a powerful voice and the perfect balance of wickedness, stage presence and charm.

It was lovely to hear iconic songs: Over The Rainbow, Follow The Yellow Brick Road and We’re Off To See The Wizard. Plus additional songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

Glinda (Emily Bull) reminded me of Barbie with her bright pink Vespa, pink helmet and a voice made for musical theatre.

It was the first time I’ve seen giant screens used to depict backdrops and add movement that simply wouldn’t be possible in the theatre. I was spellbound and loved all the dazzling special effects and unusual staging.

A special mention to Toto the Dog (Abigail Matthews) who’s puppeteering was outstanding.

The whole performance was a joy to watch and fun for the whole family.
The Wizard of Oz is on at Mayflower Theatre from Tuesday 16 to Sunday 21 January 2024. Tickets are on sale now mayflower.org.uk
