Dear Mummy, last month you visited the London Toy Fair 2016. You had a great time browsing the stands and seeing what was new in the toy industry.
One product which caught your eye was Nutty Putty by Alphabet Pie! See, I love putty in pots, the ones you squelch and mould, bounce and stretch however you don’t really do anything else with putty….until now!
Nutty Putty is different, you can actually sculpture something from it then bake it in the oven and it becomes a keepsake FOREVER! It turns to rubber and can’t be re-moulded. It’s waterproof, stain proof and it sticks on windows! Now that’s awesome! It’s glossy, rubbery, non-messy, non-drying, bouncy, shiny, mixable, non-flaking, waterproof (once baked) AND there’s even a glow in the dark version! It sounded like a wonderful idea and a perfect activity for rainy days and family get togethers.
What you get
The box is a great size and comes with a little carry handle perfect for travelling with. Everything you need is included (apart from an oven!) The box is bright and colourful, with all contents and safety information highlighted on the back.
Inside the box are instructions and great card ideas playmat with diagrams of how to make some of the sculptures. The laminated card can also be folded out to make a wipeable playmat, perfect for on the go. There is also a baking sheet for the oven and moulding tools to help with your designs.
There are sachets of putty in a wide selection of vivid colours. The putty is rather hard but with a lot of playing and moulding becomes soft and pliable. You can mix the colours together too, my mummy made pink with white and red mixed together. She had to give me a hand rolling the putty out with the rolling pin supplied as it was a bit tough for a toddler.
The recommended age was 4+ but once the putty was soft enough I had great fun making shapes with it. I’m only 3 years old and so far we’ve played with the putty on five occasions!! I even took it around to Grandmas house to play with it and she joined in. *tip – always roll on a hard surface, don’t try on mat on the carpet, as it doesn’t roll well*
Inside the box are some little cutters so we decided to make little chicks for Easter. I loved making hearts too and that was easy for a toddler to do.
The making
We opened one of the sachets, which are airtight sealed, just by pealing it open – no scissors were required, and rolled it into balls and made it nice and soft.
After rolling it flat we used the supplied ‘chick’ cutter and followed the ideas mat to make our Easter chicks.
My mummy made a Nutty Putty Crocodile and I copied her by making a baby Croc. We made hearts together, scary ghosts from the glow in the dark putty and butterflies. Grandma made me a beautiful keepsake heart!
It was a lovely, therapeutic way to spend a couple of hours making things with family. The nice thing about this was capturing it forever as a keepsake. My mummy has made holes in some so we can add them to a keyring!
The Baking
After I went to bed my mummy put our Nutty Putty creations into a preheated oven at 180 degrees for 10 minutes and they were done. The Nutty Putty turns to a rubbery plastic. They could have done with a larger baking mat as we struggled to get all our creations on one sheet and had to use the oven multiple times.
Safety
Nutty Putty is a silicone based product. The same safe material they use for bottle teats, teethers and dummies. The product is antibacterial and gluten free and has been tested to UK safety standards. All of the technical details are outlined on the Nutty Putty website here!
We had a great time playing with Nutty Putty, and it was cleaner than playing with Fymo and Playdoh leaving no residue on our hands or on our surfaces. A really great little product and it has some added educational benefits too like helping kids to develop fine motor skills, promote concentration and encourage imagination through creativity. My mummy also had a great time playing with it!
We had some odd colours left and are relieved to find that you can buy the individual colours in sachets you need on their website and through their stockists. Nutty Putty is a fairly new product so watch out for it in stores soon!
We’ll definitely be buying some more! We predict it’s gonna be big this Christmas!
Love Bella x
