Dear Mummy, we were lucky enough to spend a mid-week break at Bluestone Wales in Pembrokeshire. The highlight of our trip was our evening dancing in the woods. On the Wednesday night we went down the steep ravine to enjoy a night at Camp Smokey. Camp Smokey is a rustic woodland diner and the perfect venue to enjoy delicious smoked dishes all cooked to sizzling perfection right before your eyes. During the day you can watch friends and family flying overhead (mostly screaming) on zip wires while little ones can play panning for gold and explore the forest on nature trails.

Camp Smokey Review

Camp Smokey is located near the main activity centre in Bluestone surrounded by enormous trees that tower over it and it feels like you have been transported to another world. It was our favourite place in the whole of Bluestone to visit and we wish we spent more time there.

Camp Smokey Review

Camp Smokey is a rustic woodland diner nestled at the bottom of steep ravine with a babbling brook coursing by on either side. It looks like a log cabin in the woods and offers delicious barbecued food and has a fire pit where you can roast your own marshmallows. As we were walking down to the venue we could smell the BBQ and hear laughing before we actually saw the the restaurant.

Camp Smokey review

Its a lovely little spot in the heart of the forest, right underneath the zip-line and we had fun pointing out of the climbing platforms overhead. When we arrived the fire pit was burning ready for the marshmallow roasting and evening shindigs. During the day food is also served here at lunchtimes and its advisable to pre-book if you can. Next time we visit we’d like to explore the nature trail running through the woods that takes you down to the lake. The walk down to Camp Smokey wasn’t hard and the pathways were wide enough for buggies and safe enough for little feet.

Smokey Joe's Shindig at Camp Smokey

When we arrived for our evening shindig we were given a team to belong to (red or blue) and were shown to our table after receiving our ‘mark’ – hence the red face-paint. The evening started off with lively music (much to the children’s disbelief, usually its there bedtime?!) and an fun bushwhacker host who drummed up enthusiasm amongst the diners. Even before any alcohol was consumed people were clapping, singing loudly and dancing on the tables and its only 7pm! It was a real treat for me to be up like a big girl after my bedtime and it made being on holiday even more special.

Watch the action here – trust us you are gonna want to see this!

There was a competition between the two teams to decide who got their food first and after eating a enormous bbq meal, complete with flapjack desert, the band was back on stage and the dancing continued. All portion sizes were the same and plated up which included baked beans, roasted new potatoes, pulled pork, juicy sausages and burgers. We could help ourselves to salad and sauces and if you had any dietary requirements the team where on hand to help accommodate. As you can see below it was great portion sizes and tasted amazing!

Smokey Joe's Shindig Review at Camp Smokey

It was a fun couple of hours and we made friends with the family who we shared a table with. Mumford & Sons and Ed Sheehan renditions were beautifully sung by the talented band. The entertainment was faultless and really made the perfect family night, it actually made my mummy a bit emotional that it was such a perfect ending to a wonderful long overdue holiday. It’s just a shame the shindig didn’t last longer as spirits were high and it would have been great to have the option of hearing a story by the campfire or listen to the owls at night. However we did get to toast our marshmallows before we left and they tasted divine! We all left with big smiles on our faces and yummy food in our bellies. The walk back up the steep ravine was a leisurely stroll as we whispered goodbye to a perfect day.

Camp Smokey at Bluestone Review

We’d totally recommend visiting Camp Smokey on a trip to Bluestone Wales especially Smokey Joe’s Shindig on the Saturday or Wednesday. It lasts 90 mins and prices are £12.95 for an adult and £7.95 for children including food and entertainment. People we spoke to during our stay sadly couldn’t get into Camp Smokey because it was so popular! Booking in advance is highly recommended and we booked over a month in advance.

Love Bella x

  1. It looks like you had a great time and Smokey Joe’s Shindig is definitely not to miss. The price is really good for both entertainment and food!

  2. I love Camp Smokey! I adore Bluestone but this is hands down my favourite part of it. There is such an amazing atmosphere here. It looks like you had the best time at the Shindig! x

  3. I love how peaceful it looks here. I can’t wait to go somewhere like this when my daughter is a little older.

  4. Hi, Bluestone and camp Smokey looks great. Price seems to have increased a lot since your review, when I went to book it is 14.95 for a child and 18.95 for an adult. Seems quite high.

    1. Such a shame they increased their prices, practically doubled. We’d definitely recommend it though, such a great experience. The food and entertainment might have changed since 2017 too which might explain the price increase x

  5. It’s worth noting that if anyone is referring to this for current pricing (2023), the website does not give prices of the activites until you book. The prices now are £24.95 per adult and £19.95 per child. (Super expensive for what it was)
