Dear Mummy, British cherry season is upon us and boxes of cherries line supermarket shelves like little red jewels glistening like rubies ready to be eaten. I’m participating in the #LoveFreshCherries Challenge this summer sponsored by Love Fresh Cherries, and I can’t wait to try this tasty fruit for the first time!

See I’ve always been a little put off by the stones in cherries but we were sent a nifty kitchen gadget called a cherry stoner. A cherry stoner is invaluable for removing the stones and keeping the cherry whole. It’s a great gadget and a fun job for me to get to grips with, making it really quick and easy to get the stones out of them (as soon as I had worked out how to master it). Once I started eating cherries I couldn’t stop eating them much to my mummies bemusement. So as snacks go, these are pretty good.

Cherries are packed with vitamin C (100g provides 25% of the RDA of vitamin C) and have an abundance of antioxidants. They’re very seasonal and can be found in the UK from June to early September, so I had to be quick and pick up a punnet.

With all the hot weather we’ve been having recently ice cream has been high up my agenda but I never thought of combining it with cherries. So we decided to make a super easy American classic dessert, called a cherry knickerbocker glory.

Here’s how we made it! Watch our video to see how much fun it was to make them.

1) Get a tall glass (like the type traditionally used to serve milk shakes). They don’t have to be made of glass as you can buy plastic ones now which are a safer option.

2) Place de-stoned cherries in the base of the glass.

3) Add a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream.

4) Pour a sauce over the ice-cream, we used cherry syrup.

5) Put cream on top, we used whipped cream. Put a cherry on top and/or add an ice cream wafer.

Tah Dah! It’s really that simple! We can wait to experiment more with different toppings and more fruits too. The cherries have definitely added a lovely tasty addition to how we make ice cream desserts.

Until I took this challenge I wasn’t aware that cherries contain melatonin which is excellent for promoting good sleep. So now with a full belly I’m heading off for a nap!

  1. I have been put off by the stones too but we tried cherries last week and Sebby adores them — he has got through 5 punnets already. Will have to see if I can find a de-stoner

  2. Oo what a delicious idea! We picked loads of cherries recently and were stuck for things to make with them; this would have been perfect 🙂

  3. Totally love fresh cherries but never made knickerbocker before. It look so nice and refreshing on a hot day so going to give this a try.
