Dear Mummy, I’m a massive fan of Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks so I couldn’t wait to bring their book, Sharing A Shell, to life for World Book Day!
Sharing A Shell is one of my favourite books written by Julia Donaldson. It’s about a little hermit crab who finds a shiny new shell. But he doesn’t want to share it – not with a blobby purple anemone and a tickly bristleworm. I love how the three creatures find a way to get along and live happily together. A bit like me and my folks!!
The illustrations by Lydia Monks are bright and eye-catching and perfect for a costume! Thankfully a lot of the items we needed to make the costume were already in our house. We re-used delivery boxes and packaging (from all my toy reviews) which keep the costs down. Bought cheap paint from The Works (Acrylic paint worked the best for coverage) and had pipe cleaners already for the characters. Extra bits like the black marker pens, purple foam and glittery paper was from Hobbycraft and we cut up yellow mustard tights to make the Bristleworm.
My mummy has a glue gun, so she helped me stick everything together. I even drafted how I wanted the costume to look! I had fun painting the shell and decorating the characters from the story. Check out my video to see me making it!
So what do you think! My friends at school thought it was pretty ace – it even made it onto CBBC Newsround! (see my InstaStories) The nice thing is that I’m still playing with it at home and found that there’s a lot of people that now want to share my shell with me! Kids and cardboard boxes eh?!
I hope this gives you some inspiration for next years costume!
Love Bella x
Why not PIN for later!
The book would be something my grandson would be interested in. He is starting to read and I always get him new books to read. Your costume is so nice too. Really creative!
WOW WOW WOW! What an incredible outfit! I am not surprised Newsround picked it up!
I didn’t get to dress up this year and I really missed it. Can’t wait to see what you make next year x
Oh wow this is INCREDIBLE! What an outfit for World Book Day – I’m seriously impressed and inspired 🙂
That is an incredible outfit – I am very impressed and not surprised it got on to Newsround!
Wow, that’s amazing. I know some parents say they don’t have time but I really reckon all book day costumes should be home made, that’ half the fun! 🙂
We love making them, especially as the weather has been poor it’s given us something to do as a family indoors 🙂
Wow what an amazing costume, you really went all out on it this year. I don’t really remember dressing up for world book day when I was in school x
That’s such a creative costume and it’s good to see a lesser known character being portrayed too!
This is incredible! So creative! Well done all of you and the fact it’s home made i epic too.
Oh my goodness! This is an amazing World Book Day costume, I’m not surprised it was showcased on CBBC Newsround
I love reading the book Sharing a Shell to my little ones as it is one of their favourites too. Did everyone love your costume? Your Mummy did an amazing job!
That is such a great idea!! Love it! I left it a bit late to put anything together this year.
This is such a cool and creative costume! You look wonderful. You’ve got to love Julia Donaldson characters.
Wow, that is the coolest costume I have seen this year! I think this is one of the only Julia Donaldson books I hadn’t heard of but if its anything like the others, its great!
I love that book and the costume is amazing. Really should make more effort 😉
