How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Spin Master Toys

Dear Mummy, the fun is continuing as I become the mother of dragons! Well, toy dragons. Spin Master kindly sent us some brand new How to Train Your Dragon figures to play with and I couldn’t wait to recreate the magic of the film at home. We’ve just recently seen the new film so I was overjoyed to get characters from the Dreamworks movie.

Dragon and Viking Figure Sets (£11.99)
I couldn’t believe I got the main baddie from the new film – Grimmel and his Deathgripper Dragon. I must admit I was pretty scared when I opened him, but happy that I could replay the film scenes over and over again from my bedroom. There are 5 of these dragon and figure sets to collect and each viking figure has authentic armour (as seen in the film), a removable weapon, and poseable head, arms, and legs. My Deathgripper Dragon even came with a cool fire projectile. Good thing it was brightly coloured as I could see where it landed.

Each dragon figure has movable wings and legs so you can create battle-ready poses and loading the bright green projectile into Deathgripper’s mouth was super easy and firing was great fun. All you needed to do was press down his horn on the front of his head to launch an attack. I loved the attention to detail and the Deathgripper looked just like the dragon from the film – I just need a couple now! Grimmel could just about sit on his back and it would have been super awesome if Spin Master introduced magnets to hold the rider to the dragons for improved game play.

Great packaging on the Deluxe Dragon

Deluxe Dragon (£14.99)
I was so excited for this next unboxing! I got my very own Light Fury! I think these Deluxe Dragons are going to be really popular as they feature the two main characters Toothless and Light Fury. It’s great that they are slightly larger dragons from the previous set and the addition of glowing lights and dragon sounds was super cute.

The dragons in the deluxe range have special action features and bioluminescent fabric wings which open at the push of a button on their backs. The detailed sculpting of the dragon scales is pretty impressive, but it would have been nicer to see a shiny, scaly fabric used on the wings.

Meeting my Light Fury for the first time!

Last, but definitely not least, in my mega toy unboxing session was this amazing Giant Toothless! He was massive, so big in fact that we had to slot his tail into place, as he came in two parts.

Pretty impressive wing span!

Giant Fire Breathing Toothless (£27.99)
Measuring over 20 inches long with 22-inch, pull-open wings, Spin Master’s Giant Fire Breathing Toothless is loaded with exciting battle features that I couldn’t wait to play with.

Amazing detail

I was so excited that I nearly forgot to switch on the camera! It was easy to assemble him myself and I actually enjoyed the challenge of slotting his tail on and adding the batteries. This is the only dragon in the range that doesn’t come with batteries included. Luckily we had 3 x AAA to hand, we also needed a small screwdriver to open.

Engineering my dragon

There was a full instruction booklet included but it was pretty simple to set up. I needed to fill up Toothless’s water chamber on his back with water using the dropper included to soak the sponge which then created the cool mist which came out of his mouth.

It was a pretty cool effect and I loved seeing the smoke (water vapour) come out of his mouth and I pretended it was real fire much to my mummy’s amusement. I needed to push the button behind his left ear to activate lights and smoke-like puffs of dragon’s breath but I found the button a bit stiff to begin with. Thankfully it eased up the more we played with him.

However we did have a problem with the glow-in-the-dark projectile that he fired out of his mouth. Loading the projectile in his mouth was easy but after several unsuccessful attempts to fire, loading up with different angles and using the button under his right ear, a fluke chance found that we needed to squeeze both ears at the same time?! We couldn’t tell whether this was a fault with the button, spring or just user error? Either way it didn’t bother me.

I had so much fun fighting with the Giant Fire Breathing Toothless and my smaller Grimmel and Deathgripper trying to save my Light Fury and its great to see all of the range working so well together for extended play.

Toothless and Light Fury Spin Master Toy Review

The Spin Master toys are priced between £14.99 and £34.99 and available to buy at The Entertainer, Smyths Toy Stores, Amazon and Argos and we can see them being a great hit with kids and adults alike – definitely something for the HTTYD collectors.

  1. These are super cute! My son loves this franchise; he’s a little too old for these toys, but my nephew would be over the moon!
